Longest monocable ropeway in the world

In mid-2022, the go-ahead was given for the construction of the world’s longest detachable monocable ropeway with a length of 6.6 km to access Boiling Lake in the island state of Dominica. A distance that would otherwise take 6 hours of walking can now be covered easily and comfortably in 20 minutes. This means that visitors can immerse themselves in the heart of the Caribbean rainforest within a very short time and explore the country‘s unrivalled nature.

LCS supplied…

… two cable crane systems with a length of 2.5 and 4.3 kilometers for the construction of the cable car, which is being completed by Doppelmayr. The systems have a payload of 6 tons and are used for the transport of support material and the assembly of the supports. Furthermore, it is also possible to transport up to 8 people along the route using a gondola.

Both systems are driven by a GW350D winch with a pulling force of 110 kN. A GCS60 lifting unit will be used to transport the material and the gondola.

The excavation work…

… has now been completed. The vegetation on site was a major challenge. It is very dense and there are no access roads. This meant that the individual support positions could only be reached after several hours of walking. Much of the work (such as the excavation) also had to be done by hand.

The next step is to start preparing for the installation so that the assembly of the supports can begin.
